Cauliflower cheese. There’s nothing more comforting than a cauliflower bake, paired with some delicious smoked haddock and topped with melted cheese – especially in these colder winter evenings.
When it come’s to a Primal lifestyle, one misconception that people have is a Primal diet doesn’t consist of cheese – at all. This misconception mainly comes from the view of a strict paleo diet. However, I believe that as long as you follow a few guidelines then cheese can certainly be part of a Primal lifestyle.
It’s important to understand though that I am not talking about the cheese that comes from brightly packaged wrappings. These types of cheeses are in fact factory produced cheeses and are definitely not something we want to be consuming! That kind of cheese is product engineered in a lab and filled with preservatives and emulsifiers that render it to make it deliciously meltable, spreadable, or even sprayable (don’t even think about it!). You can think of this kind of cheese as fast food – it’s everything but natural. My advice would to only consume organic cheese – something I discuss in the book.
I don’t eat cheese every day but when I do I always make sure that I go for cheeses that are raw, full fat dairy, organic and non-homogenzied dairy. Be sure to thoroughly check the label and don’t be fooled into smart worded packaging! The benefits of raw, full fat cheese is incredible compared to your brightly packaged, plastic cheese – in terms of health and taste. Raw, grass fed cheese in particular has also been proven to contain cancer fighting properties as it contains a high level of conjugated linoleic acid (a naturally occurring compound found in ruminants products). As well as that, raw grass fed cheese has a considerably higher amount of magnesium, calcium, beta-carotene, and vitamins C, D, A and E.
This delicious bake combines together the flavours of a fish pie and cauliflower cheese to make a wonderful dish that’s full of protein and high in good fats.
This recipe can make a perfect mid-week family meal and I’m pretty sure everyone will love it. This smoked haddock and cauliflower cheese bake is creamy, full of flavour and will definitely leave you feeling satisfied – minus the CARBS. It’s also incredibly simple to prepare. As well as all of that, I’d like to think that this is a great ‘mix it up’ kind of dish as it can be made with or without the haddock. Like all of my dishes, I insist that you make the ingredients work for you!

Smoked Haddock and Cauliflower Cheese Bake
A primal friendly dish that combines together the flavours of a fish pie and cauliflower cheese to make a wonderful dish that's full of protein and high in good fats.
- 1 large cauliflower head cut into small florets
- 2/3 fillets smoked haddock organic and cut into large chunks
- 100 grams gruéye cheese organic
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped
- 2 tbsp fresh chives chopped
- 1 pinch paprika
- 1 pinch salt and pepper
- 1 cup peas
Begin by pre-heating your oven to gas mark 6.
Steam your cauliflower and peas for 5 minutes and then drain.
In an oven proof dish, add the cauliflower, smoked haddock and peas. Top with the herbs, salt and pepper and then sprinkle on the cheese.
Place the dish in the middle of the oven and bake for 30 minutes. Once done, remove from the oven and serve straight away.
