Banana bread has always been a favourite bake of mine and as I've grown older, I've enjoyed taking the classic recipe and making it into my own. I especially love my Coffee Banana Bread recipe.
Using my banana bread recipes as inspiration, I also love turning them into something slightly different. This time around, these paleo double chocolate banana bread muffins seemed the perfect hit. Not only are they grain, dairy & refined sugar-free, but they're also lower in carbohydrates than your traditional muffin recipe too, making them suitable for those who are following a Primal/Paleo diet.
While these chocolate banana bread muffins are a lot healthier, fear not, they're still just as hearty, moist and chocolatey as ever. In fact, this may just be one of my favourite chocolate muffin recipes in a long time!
How to make paleo chocolate banana bread muffins
Sweetened with banana and only a tiny amount of coconut sugar, these paleo muffins are free from refined sugar and plain flour making them a perfect paleo-friendly bake. As mentioned above, they're also dairy-free thanks to the addition of almond butter. Which, by the way, totally makes this recipe.
Paleo banana bread muffins - no flour
Instead of plain flour, I've opted for almond flour (ground almonds) which gives an incredibly moist texture to the muffins. And lastly, for that double chocolate sensation, I've swapped cocoa powder for organic cacao powder and used only 80% dark chocolate chunks (please swap for dairy-free chocolate if you need to).
Easy banana bread recipe for kids
With all of my recipes, I try and make them as easy as possible and this recipe is no exception. With just 9 ingredients, 1 bowl and 1 spoon, these banana bread muffins couldn't be easier to make. So get the kids involved, put your aprons on and get baking!

Paleo Double Chocolate Banana Bread Muffins
A twist on the classic banana bread recipe - why not have muffins instead? This chocolatey recipe is grain-free, lower in carbs, free from refined sugar and contains all-natural ingredients.
- 3 medium organic eggs
- 3 ripe banana's (very spotty)
- 50g almond butter
- 180g almond flour (ground almonds)
- 3 tbsp coconut sugar
- 30g cacao powder
- 3 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
- 100g dark chocolate chunks
Begin by preheating your oven to 175c.
In a bowl, mash your banana's together with a fork.
Add the almond butter and eggs and whisk.
Slowly add the almond flour to the mix and stir in. Add the cacao powder, baking powder, sea salt and coconut sugar to the bowl and mix everything together until combined.
Next, fold in the chocolate chunks.
Line a muffin tray with 12 muffin cases. Pour a heaped tablespoon worth of mixture into every case and then pop in the middle of the oven to bake for 15 minutes (or until cooked through - check with a clean knife). Once baked, remove from the oven and leave to cool. Store in an airtight container and consume within 3 days.
