When it comes to snacking Primally, we always try to aim for something high in healthy fats and protein - if possible. Which is why we've created a low carb chocolate energy ball recipe that will help keep you feeling satisfied and full throughout the day.
Not only is this recipe extremely quick and easy to make, but it's also packed full of antioxidants, essentials fats (yes, we love fats, can you tell?), vitamins and minerals. It's also super healthy, which you may find to be a bit of a surprise as it tastes like a true chocolatey treat!
At Primal Cure, we're a big fan of foods that fill your body with nutritional goodness and thanks to this recipe, you get taste and goodness all in one!
Here are a few key health beneficial ingredients that we've used...
Flaxseed contains up to 800 times more lignans than other plant foods, which helps to balance hormone levels in the body and reduce the feeling of stress. Flaxseed is also high in fibre so it can help you feel fuller for longer. In fact, did you know that just one tablespoon contains 1.3 grams of protein, fibre (of course), omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins and minerals?
Another flaxseed health benefit: they have the possibility to help lower cholesterol levels. Recent studies show that consuming 3 tablespoons of flaxseed daily for three months, helped to lower cholesterol levels by 17%, as well as reducing LDL cholesterol by almost 20%.
Primal Whey Protein Powder
Whey protein is a complete, high-quality protein, containing all of the essential amino acids. In addition, it is very digestible and absorbed from the gut quickly compared to other types of protein. Because it's so easily absorbed, it makes it one of the best dietary sources of protein available.
Protein, however we choose to consume it, is the basic building block for all life forms - aka, it's essential! Protein helps to contribute to a growth in muscle mass, as well as maintaining muscle mass and normal bone health. Because protein cannot be stored in the body, we need to regularly ingest good quality sources.
Protein is also responsible for the creation of essential hormones such as insulin, melatonin and human growth hormone. Even if you don't have any health issues, it's important to consume protein so it can keep repairing, renewing and building new cells.
Just like everything at Primal Cure, our protein is 100% natural. When fuelling your body, whether it be after your HIIT workout, or you just want to increase your protein levels, you don’t want to poison it with a load of artificial sweeteners, flavourings, or create a huge insulin spike with glucose-laden sugar – something you may experience with other protein powders on the market. Raw organic honey
We try to avoid sugar as much as possible when living a Primal lifestyle and therefore when it comes to baking and sweet treats, we look for healthier alternatives.
Raw organic honey when compared to refined sugar, has more nutrients for its calories and contains several health benefits. And, the higher quality the honey (raw and organic), the more antioxidants it will have. These include organic acids and phenolic compounds like flavonoids. Therefore, in a nutshell, raw organic honey provides you with a lot more nutrients and health benefits, than sugar would - which, by the way, contains 0 nutrients.
So with all that said, if you're after a 5-minute recipe which requires no baking/cooking, is packed full of goodness and will curb stomach rumbles, then this one is for you! Let's get rolling...
Low Carb Chocolate Energy Ball Recipe
Serves 8 bite-size balls
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 0 minutes!
2 tbsp Primal chocolate whey protein powder
2 tbsp flaxseed flour (also known as flaxseed meal)
1 tsp chia seeds
5 tbsp ground almonds
2 tbsp cacao powder
3 tbsp raw organic honey
Pop all of the ingredients into a bowl and mix together until you get a slightly sticky and crumbly texture. You may need to mix for a few minutes.
Using your hands, create 8 small balls (about a teaspoons worth). Roll them into the palm of your hands and press them together with your fingertips. If the mixture isn't sticky enough, then add a little extra honey.
Once done, pop them onto a plate and place them into the fridge. We suggest keeping them in the fridge until consumption. Enjoy!
