Garlic Mushrooms and Smoked Salmon Topped Waffles

I don’t have waffles very often but when I do, I go all out and have them the best way possible. If you haven’t guessed by now from my recent recipes such as my smoked salmon egg bake, I’m a big fan of breakfasts that contain a good amount of healthy fats that help kick start our engines in the morning and keep us leaving full until lunchtime.

Today’s recipe inspiration comes from a Primal reader who shared her recent love for garlic after reading my post about the nutritional bulb and the benefits it can provide for our bodies. So, with Selina’s interest, I’ve provided her with a delicious and Primal friendly recipe that allows her to consume garlic naturally whilst making it a family friendly recipe. If you’re a waffle lover and thought that transitioning to a Primal lifestyle meant that you had to give up your beloved pancakes with abs, then think again. Thanks to my garlic mushrooms and smoked salmon topped waffles recipe, you can enjoy waffles the Primal way.

To make the waffles themselves, you’ll need only three ingredients. Yes, just three. Cream cheese, eggs and a little coconut flour. When it comes to Primal eating many people often believe that cheese is way off limits because usually (and very naively) when we first enter a world of eating healthy, we tend to cut out all dairy products because we’re led to believe that anything with fat and dairy is harmful to our health and waistline. Many people also believe that because cheese is full of lactose that it’s also full of sugar. However, when cheese is fermented the lactose (sugar) is significantly reduced and the furthermore, the longer the cheese is aged, then the more it provides you with a healthy bacteria which ferments even more lactose. So, my Primal friends, you can indeed enjoy some waffles in moderation as part of a Primal lifestyle.

If you feel like pushing the boat out one weekend morning, then these Primal friendly waffles are perfect for you. They’re light, filling, full of delicate flavours that compliment the salmon and garlic mushrooms and overall, this dish is packed with healthy fats and protein. It’s a real weekend breaker in my eyes. All you need are the chosen ingredients listed below, a blender and a decent waffle maker. Don’t worry, it’s not as time consuming as it sounds. You’ll simply blend the waffle ingreidnets together, fry the garlic mushrooms whilst the waffles cooks and woohlah, in 10 minutes you’ll have yourself a delicious and healthy Primal breakfast.

Garlic Mushrooms and Smoked Salmon Topped Waffles

A low carb and Primal friendly waffle recipe made from just 3 simple ingredients.

Servings 2 servings


  • 90 grams cream cheese organic and natural
  • 2 large eggs organic
  • 1 tsp coconut flour
  • 2 tsp dill optional
  • 4 slices smoked salmon organic
  • 4 large mushrooms organic and sliced
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil organic
  • 2 cloves garlic finely chopped
  • 4 pinches pepper
  • 2 cups spinach organic


  1. Begin by mixing the cream cheese, eggs , coconut flour and 2 pinches of pepper together in a blender. 

  2. Once blended, pour the waffle mixture onto your hot waffle iron and close. Cook until your waffle maker instructs you to lift the griddle. Repeat this process until you've used up all your mixture. 

  3. Whilst your waffles are cooking, heat a pan with extra virgin olive oil and add the slices mushrooms with the garlic. Cook until golden and soft. Add the spinach and wilt.

  4. Serve your waffles up between two plates and evenly split the spinach, mushrooms and salmon (2 slices each) onto each plate. Add the dill on top of the salmon and sprinkle with the rest of your pepper across both plates. Dig in!
