What Is Konjac? 4 Benefits Of Konjac (Glucomannan)

Konjac, also referred to as Glucomannan, is a herb grown in parts of Asia. The corm of the konjac plant is most commonly used to make a rich source of soluble dietary fibre. In fact, it's one of the only few clinically proved ingredients to aid weight loss and recognised by the EU Commission. It's why we use it in our SlimShotz drink and Fibrehydrate zero carb pastas.

How Is Konjac Used?

For many years konjac has been used in traditional Chinese medicine and more recently, has been enjoyed as a dietary supplement to help aid weight loss, support diabetes and manage cholesterol levels.

How Does Konjac Aid Weight Loss?

One of the most commonly asked questions we get at Primal Living is how konjac (glucomannan) helps aid weight loss. Well, it's quite simple really. It works by expanding up to 50x in your stomach, which helps set off your stretch receptors and sends the hormone 'leptin' up to the brain to tell us we're full. This avoids over-eating, snacking between meals and those unnecessary hunger cues that can start to happen as you begin a weight loss journey.

From its high fibre content to its ability to help manage cholesterol levels, konjac has an array of health benefits. Although the importance of a high fibre diet is often spoken about, many people don't truly understand just how important it can be. 1. Can help regulate bowel movements

Regular bowel movements not only supports a healthy digestive system, but rids the body of toxins and in turn, supports hormone health. A 2008 study found that those who suffered from constipation and supplemented konjac daily improved their bowel movements by 30% and colonic ecology. 

2. May help aid weight loss

It's a no brainer really that konjac can help aid weight loss by making you feel fuller quicker and for longer - this not only helps you to stop overeating, but snacking between meals too.

In a study carried out in 2005, it was found that supplementing your diet with konjac/glucomannan can increase your chances of weight loss, rather than a placebo. It was also found that glucomannan was the most effective dietary supplement when compared to guar gum and alginate.

3. Helps manage diabetes

Ongoing studies, including this 2015 review, have found that glucomannan has impacted the lives of those who have diabetes by making them less likely to eat foods that could increase their blood sugar levels. How? Because it made them feel fuller for longer - minimising the need to eat more/have larger servings. 

4. Can help manage cholesterol levels

Thanks to its ability to help manage weight loss, studies have also found that konjac may help lower cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.

Furthermore, a study from 2017 investigated how much glucomannan is needed to help improve cholesterol levels, of which the results showed 3g per day to be beneficial to the individual.
