Move aside toxic shampoo’s, there’s a new homemade, Primal friendly shampoo in town and it’s made with a kitchen staple – baking soda.

Why on earth though would you want to make your own shampoo when you can easily pick one up in your local drugstore and save yourself the hassle? Well my Primal friends, your shop brought shampoo (along with conditioner) contains a scary amount of harmful ingredients that definitely aren’t Primal friendly! For example, the most popular shampoo ingredients, sodium lauryl, sodium laureth sulfate, DEA/Diethanolamine, parabens and fragrances (to name a few) can be seriously harmful. ‘Fragrances’ may not sound too bad though, right? Wrong! Fragrances on a shampoo label can actually mean that your bottle has a presence of over 4,000 separate chemical ingredients. Crazy!

Unfortunately, there really is no such thing as ‘natural’ haircare on the shop shelves anymore. This includes shampoo brands that try to fool you with sentences like ‘contains natural coconut oil’. Yes, it may contain natural coconut oil but after the processing of the coconut oil and the pairing with all the other toxic ingredients found in shampoo, it’s simply another man-made detergent full of damaging ingredients.

An amazing way to look at beauty care is to see it as junk food for our skin, hair and mouth! Think about it: living a Primal life means we avoid processed, junk and ready-made packaged food. Therefore, if we apply the same principle to our beauty care then it quickly makes sense. All beauty care is packaged, ready-made, processed and indeed, unnatural. If however, we took to making our own beauty care then we know the exact ingredients being used.

I try to use the most organic and homemade shampoo when possible. Although, I know this isn’t the most practical for everyone, especially based on hair types. In the book I express how important it is to only use homemade beauty products during our Primal Detox so it’s important to follow along with that.

Baking soda, despite it’s baking properties, can actually make a wonderful cleaning shampoo. It’s effective and more importantly, it’s natural! I decided to introduce our shampoo recipes with this Primal baking soda shampoo because chances are that your scalp contains quite a lot of product build up thanks to the toxins and ingredients found in your usual shampoo! By using baking soda it’s able to give your scalp a deep clean without damaging your hair or scalp.

This recipe contains only three natural ingredients and comes in two parts. The first part is a baking soda wash which is then followed by an apple cider vinegar rinse. The vinegar rinse is more beneficial to hair than you may think! Apple cider vinegar is naturally high in acetic acid and has a pH level which is incredibly close to that of human hair. Regularly rinsing with apple cider vinegar can help bring your scalp and hair back to its ideal acidity, especially if you have oily hair. As well as that, apple cider vinegar is a antimicrobial which can kill bacteria and fungus and clear up common underlying causes of dandruff and hair loss. Therefore, it makes a fantastic ingredient for a cleansing shampoo. Bye bye product build up!

Since this recipe deeply cleanses your hair and scalp you can expect volume, cleanliness and body. Sure, it’s simple, but that’s the beauty of it! You don’t need all the chemicals in the world… Just keep it natural like nature intended!

You may find that on your first wash your hair feels a little oily but this is totally normal as your scalp is adjusting to the different pH levels. By the fourth wash (at least) your hair and scalp will start to adjust to your new regime. Like I said, this recipe is cheap, effective and completely Primal friendly. It’s time to ditch the toxic shampoos and say hello to natural hair care!
