Milk thistle is a natural herb and has small hard seed-like fruits called achenes which contain an active component, silymarin. These achenes are the main source of the herbs medicinal properties. Milk thistle is commonly known for it’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and is mainly used to detoxify the body – particularly the liver.
While milk thistle seeds were used to promote liver health as far back as 2,000 years ago, modern use of the herb began back in 1968 with the discovery of the bioflavonoid complex silymarin. Since then, researchers have discovered and studied many health benefits that has led to the development of highly concentrated extracts that are standardized to 80% silymarin.
Recent studies have also backed up research to show that standard milk thistle extracts do indeed promote the treatment of liver diseases. Therefore, it’s a popular supplement for those recovering from liver disease/damage from alcohol abuse.
