With one in three adults not getting enough sleep per night, it comes to no surprise to hear that the topic of CBD, sleep and insomnia is quickly growing. 

The causes of insomnia 

Firstly, it’s important to highlight the main reasons why insomnia can occur. Stress, anxiety, depression, joint pain, inflammation, a high caffeinated diet and a poor sleep environment are just a few root causes of insomnia.  

Although insomnia is the most common sleep complaint, it is not a single sleep disorder. We like to think of insomnia as a symptom of another problem. The problem causing insomnia differs from person to person and may be down to any of the above. 

The good news is that insomnia can be cured and treated with healthy changes. 

How CBD may help you sleep 

In 2019 a research study looked at whether CBD could improve sleep and/or reduce anxiety (the main cause for insomnia). The study itself involved 72 subjects, with 47 experiencing anxiety and 25 experiencing poor sleep. The subjects were each given 25 milligrams of CBD in capsule form each day. In the first month, it was reported tht 79.2% of the patients reported lower anxiety levels and 66.7% reported better sleep. 

How does CBD affect the way we sleep? Well, CBD has been known to improve sleep quality by interacting with serotonin and gaba receptors. These receptors are directly involved with regulating the sleep-wake cycle which hugely affects our sleep quality. 

While studies conclude the positive effects CBD has on sleep, it’s still tricky to identify exactly why. However, many researchers highlight the fact that CBD improves sleep simply because it tackles the root causes of insomnia such as the causes mentioned above.  

How CBD may help insomnia 

It’s common for people who suffer from insomnia to suffer from fatigue and exhaustion. With small doses, CBD may help sustain your energy levels and keep you alert and in turn, help you establish a consistent sleep pattern.  

A consistent sleep pattern is cruical for a healthy night’s sleep and CBD has been known to treat physical conditions that may disrupt sleep patterns. These may be chronic leg syndrome, joint pain and migraines - to name a few.
