Switching To A Natural Deodorant: The Pros And Cons

Natural deodorants are becoming more prominent due to the ongoing debate between antiperspirants and deodorants, and potentially unhealthy ingredients in both, but particularly antiperspirants. So, why do we love natural deodorants so much? In this week's blog post we dive into the world of natural deodorants and both the pros and cons...

The pros of switching to a natural deodorant

Natural ingredients

First things first, natural deodorants are formulated with 100% natural ingredients (like ours), which means it doesn't contain any harmful or synthetic ingredients.

0% aluminium

Aluminium in particular is one of the biggest concerns when it comes to the ingredients found in deodorants, with some research highlighting that these ingredients can possibly cause a number of issues from skin allergies to breast cancer. Although antiperspirant deodorants have not been conclusively linked to breast cancer, they have also not been conclusively ruled out as a risk factor.

You see, aluminium works by simply blocking the pores in your armpit (hence the no sweat claims). So aside from the potential serious side effects, preventing the release of sweats can upset the bacterial balance of your underarms, as well as possibly causing unwanted skin irritation in a very sensitive area.

Kinder to skin

This one is my favourite! Natural deodorants are made with much kinder ingredients which means they're formulated with oils and botanical extracts instead of parabens which would have been used otherwise. Our Primal Living deodorant is scented with natural lavender and lemon to help you feel fresh all day long.

Antibacterial

The purpose of natural deodorants is to not only keep your armpits feeling fresh, but to still reduce the bacteria which grows in your armpit. Many natural deodorants use natural substances to kill bacteria and plant extracts to help reduce bacteria furthermore and also cover any unwelcome smells.

Our natural deodorant contains bee propolis for its wonderful anti-microbial properties.

The cons of a natural deodorant (which are pretty minor if you ask us)

It will take a few weeks for your armpits to adjust

When you switch from an aluminium based deodorant to a natural deodorant like ours, it'll take a while for your armpits to adjust as you'll no longer be blocking your pores with harmful ingredients.

Those first few weeks of switching will be almost like a detox for your armpits as the pores slowly unblock themselves and spring back to life.

Also, did you know that it's quite likely that those unwanted pit stains (the yellowing on the under arms of your favourite white t-shirt) are due to the reaction of sweat and aluminium, rather than just sweat alone. So, though you may still experience some extra moisture with a natural deodorant, you're less likely to be left with stubborn yellowing after.

They *can* be more expensive

But not ours! Most natural deodorants on the market can be pretty costly but at Primal, we're proud to say that our 100% natural roll on deodorant starts from £2.99 and can be purchased as a 3 for 2 offer. Don't say we don't look after those pennies of yours!

A natural deodorant won't stop you from sweating

Because natural deodorants are made from natural ingredients, they won't block your pores and as a result, they won't stop you from sweating (which you've probably already guessed).

We understand that this isn't ideal for everyone, but we think it's perfectly natural and healthy to sweat as it's our body's way of naturally cooling down. But don't worry, while you may feel a little more moist (or you might not), our natural deodorant will still help to mask body odour that can occur after sweating while keeping your sweat glands both healthy and happy.

If you ask us, switching to a natural deodorant not only keeps us our armpits free from harmful ingredients and potential irritation, but it also allows us to live life a little more natural and happier knowing that we're being kinder to our bodies.

If the price we have to pay is a few weeks of armpit detoxing and a little extra moisture on warmer days, then it's a price we're willing to pay for our overall health. Wouldn't you agree?
